MagNet 6.22, ElecNet 6.14, and ThermNet 1.12 releases
(32-bit and 64-bit versions)Highlights of these releases include the following:
- Loss calculation in MagNet's Transient solvers (see below)
- Added:
- extrusion as a mesh layer option
- position-dependent (forward/backward) load parameters
- parameters that relate to the "Raleigh region" and the number of "curve fit knots" for material curves
- Enhanced display of curved surfaces
- Improvements in volume meshing and re-meshing for MagNet's Transient 3D with Motion solver and general solution speedup

Loss calculation in transient solvers available in latest version of MagNet
There are many different formulations available to account for iron loss in problems where the waveform is non-sinusoidal. Regardless of which method is used, the calculations are all approximations that try to generalize the data in the standard loss curves. These loss curves are a function of frequency and peak induction, which assume a sinusoidal excitation. In order to use these curves, the equivalent frequency and equivalent peak induction have to be determined from the transient waveform. Version 6.22 of MagNet achieves this by allowing the equivalent frequency to be specified as an independent parameter for each geometric component. The equivalent peak induction is calculated as half the difference between minimum and maximum values in a specified time interval. The loss curve for a particular component is constructed based on the specified equivalent frequency, and this curve is used to determine the loss at each point in the component, as a function of the equivalent peak induction.
Technical Notes
A technical note on Thin shell meshing with layers is provided as an overview of how the use of Infolytica's Mesh Layers feature can help maximize the efficiency of a solution mesh and obtain more accurate results.
Free MagNet Trial Edition now comes with additional documentation that is ideal for undergraduate courses
If you're one of the thousands that have already downloaded a free copy of MagNet Trial Edition, you're probably aware of the extensive documentation package that is included with the software. What you may not know is that additional documentation, tailored towards the use of MagNet in a classroom environment, is also available free-of-charge from our web site. This includes Year 1 & Year 2 course modules (Electromechanics / Electrical Machines and Systems) and a document that compares several different designs for a moving-coil driver of the kind used in loudspeakers and vibration generators. We wish to thank Dr. J D Edwards of the Department of Engineering and Design at the University of Sussex for allowing us to reproduce and distribute these documents.
