Finite Element Analysis of HV Pulse Transformer Bobbin

There have been some number of high-voltage failures of the high-voltage pulse transformer assembly due to poor, or insufficient, impregnation of the coil assembly. This poor impregnation was found mainly between two flanges formed by the three-piece bobbin presently being used. In response to this potential failure mechanism, and in order to reduce the cost of the assembly, a single, molded bobbin was designed for the pulse transformer for the P3I program. This new bobbin only serves to wind the inner primary coil. Support and insulation for the secondary windings will be provided by a build-up of Nomex M (Mica filled) insulation paper. The integrity of this new insulation configuration is the subject of this report.
