Electromagnetic Design of the SLS Superconducting Bending Magnet with Linear Gradient

The Paul Scherrer Institute is studying a synchrotron radiation source, the Swiss Light Source, for a variety of applications in physics, chemistry, material sciences and industrial production. Specially optimized superconducting magnets will provide the hard X-rays necessary for structure analysis and micro-fabrication. This design study investigates a combines function magnet system with dipole and quadrupole coils, for bending and focusing the electron beam. The electromagnetic characeteristics of the magne, including the end effects, are studied in 2-D and 3-D analyses. The proposed concept is feasible to satisfy the requirements of field strength and quality in the envelope of specifications, while an optimization of the coil geometry is recommended to improve the logituditnal magnetic characteristics.
