CAE of Electrical Machines

Most installed CAE systems are primarily used for electronics or mechanical-engineering design only. Equivalent CAE electrical-machine-design techniques already exists, but only a small handful of companies have installed, or are planning to install them. It is important that electrical-machine designers should be aware of all the many overwhelming advantages which CAE can offer.

Many electrical-machine designers would claim that there is nothing new in CAE, since they have been using computers for the last three decades for just this purpose. Indeed, there are still those ancient stalwarts who insist that 'nothing faster than their slide rule'. However, times and techniques are changing, and it appears to be generally agreed that, with careful planning, modern CAE methods can produce benefits and profits. The primary object of this article is to highlight CAE from the standpoint of the electrical engineer concerned with all aspects of the design and manufacture of electrical machinery, and to indicate how he and his company might benefit of the new CAE techniques.
