Comparison of 2- and 3D Finite Element Analysis of a Switched Reluctance Motor

Software packages for the two dimensional analysis of electromagnetic and electrostatic field problems have been available for a number of years; recently software packages to perform three dimensional analysis have become available. Since 3-D analysis is significantly more expensive that 2-D analysis both time wise and computationally, it is desirable to know if 3-D analysis yields significantly different results than 2-D analysis. This paper attempts to answer that question for a type of motor that is commonly analyzed with 2-D software with satisfactory results, by presenting a comparison of the results obtained by 2-D and 3-D finite element analysis of a doubly salient switched reluctance motor.
