Audible Noise and Torque Pulsations of Field Oriented Controlled Permanent Magnet Machines

The paper describes a finite element based analysis of three permanent magnet servomotors with respect to torque production and audible noise. The first motor having radially magnetized magnets. The second one has a rotor that is not fully covered by magnets and therefore has a different reactance in both d- and q-axis. The third one is a buried magnet machine showing also a different q- and d-axis reactance. A method is shown, giving the machine parameters as a function of the machine lay-out. The torque is calculated using the virtual work and the Maxwell stress tensor. Using the Fourier analysis predictions may be made on the audible noise behaviour of the different machine models.
