Creating complex windings in MagNet is now much easier with the new multi-segment sweep feature.

A single element of the winding is shown here. The element must be designed to avoid intersecting adjacent coil elements. An involute is one of the standard shapes which achieves this. Once defined, the full winding can be created quickly in MagNet by multiple imports of the element.

Creating the coil element is made easier with MagNet's automatic blend options. The size of the blend can be set in three different ways, using either a minimum blend radius, the distance to trim adjacent segments of the sweep path, or explicitly setting the start and end points of the blend. The twist of the blend is also calculated automatically to keep the profile aligned along the sweep path.

Boolean operations and periodic boundary conditions make it easy to model only a section of the device, which makes solution time faster and saved files smaller, an important consideration in 3d.

Another example of a complex winding which is somewhat more compact than the involute.
