Voice Coil Actuator

Actuator with MagNet for SolidWorks

The Voice Coil Actuator is a high precision motion control device. These actuators are capable of both low speed, low acceleration movements as well as high speed, high acceleration movements. Programmable servo controls allow the actuator to carry out a "move profile" as required. Its primary advantage over other motion control devices is that the load is directly coupled to the actuator.

In this example we use MagNet for SOLIDWORKS to examine the flux distribution created by a rare-earth permanent magnet assembly. The field profile generated by the magnets combined with an energized coil provide a suitable Voice Coil Actuator response.

In this example we use MagNet for SolidWorks to examine the response of an energized Voice Coil Actuator.

METHODS and RESULTS

VOICE COIL ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY

A Voice Coil Actuator assembly is created with 2 rare earth permanent magnets. The magnets generate a specific gradient in field profile in the gap. A coil located in the gap is energized to create motion.

ASSIGNING MATERIALS

MagNet for SolidWorks allows one to click and assign a material to either a single Component or a group of Components. In this case each magnet is assigned to be of the Samarium Cobalt magnet type [SmCo]. The coil is assigned to be Copper; the mounting plates are assigned to be Cold-Rolled Steel, and the mounting brackets are assigned to Aluminum.

AUTOMATICALLY DETECTS the DIRECTION of CURRENT for the COIL

MagNet for SolidWorks automatically determines the direction of current for an intended Winding so that a Coil can be easily created. This Coil is then easily assigned to a Source by itself or connected to other Coils. The definition of the excitation for the Source can be DC, sinusoidal, a pulse, or a piece-wise linear waveform as a function of time.

ASSIGNING "MESH CONTROLS"

MagNet for SolidWorks allows one to assign a variety of "mesh controls" to the Components. Here both a Maximum Overall Element Size and a Curvature Refinement Angle are assigned to the Top Plate Component. Where desired more than one Component can be selected for similar "mesh control" assignments.

MESH DISTRIBUTION

The chosen mesh controls result in an even distribution of tetrahedra throughout the volumes of each Component in the assembly.

CURRENT DENSITY on the WINDING SURFACE

MagNet for SolidWorks allows one to review the Current Density solution on the surface of the Winding Component in the form of a Shade Plot using the Vector Magnitude filter. In this case, the range is from 0 – 4x106 A/m2.

FORCE & TORQUE GENERATED on the WINDING COMPONENT

MagNet for SolidWorks automatically computes the Force and Torque on a Component or group of touching Components. A Force of ~20 N and a Torque of ~2 N-m is acting on the Winding.

FLUX DENSITY on the SURFACE of the COMPONENTS

MagNet for SolidWorks allows one to review the Flux Density solution from alternate perspectives. By rotating the assembly to the side the Shade Plot is shown from an angular perspective within a range of 0.0 - 2.0 Tesla.

3D SHADE PLOT of AIR GAP FLUX DENSITY

MagNet for SolidWorks allows one to review the flux distribution in a volume of interest. Thresholds can be set to customize the solution. Here we see a 3D Shade Plot which reveals the nature of the flux in the Air Gap which has a value between 0.2 Tesla - 0.6 Tesla.

FLUX DISTRIBUTION THROUGHOUT the ENTIRE VOICE COIL ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY

MagNet for SolidWorks allows one to review the solution within the interior of the Components by reviewing a single plane using the Clip Mesh filter. This animation shows the solution as the plane propagates through the Voice Coil Actuator assembly from the bottom to the top of the entire assembly.
