Design and Analysis of a 2 HP Wound Field Induction Motor

Motors and generators with MotorSolve

A 2 HP wound field induction motor example is used to showcase some of the design and analysis capabilities of MotorSolve IM. The motor contains 30 rotor slots and 36 stator slots. Presented below are some of the salient features of MotorSolve IM that allows the user to implement a typical design cycle. This includes automated winding selections, load point analysis, bridge simulations etc.

METHODS and RESULTS

ROTOR WINDING CONFIGURATION

MotorSolve IM lists all possible balanced winding configurations for both the rotor and stator. The winding factors, phase and line-line resistance, fill factor, conductor area are all reported.

EQUIVALENT CIRCUIT & DESIGN SUMMARY

Machine parameter determination is facilitated by computing the equivalent circuit parameters.

ROTOR OHMIC LOSS

Accurate determination of loss components (ohmic, hysteresis, eddy current) is an important aspect of induction motor design. Shaded plots of loss distribution and other important entities (flux density) required for design iterations are computed easily.

LOAD POINT ANALYSIS

Performance envelop corresponding to various load points are computed using a number of options; time harmonic analysis, dynamic simulations etc. Ranging of speed and slip at various load points corresponding to specific voltage or torque, constant volts per hertz are supported in the software. Such capabilities allow the user to execute design iterations and obtain results quickly.

BRIDGE SIMULATION & BAR CURRENTS

Bridge simulations to mimic the driver is also supported. Among some unique results that can be obtained from this are the bar currents. Other typical entities (torque, efficiency, ohmic and core losses) are also reported by bridge simulations.

WOUND FIELD MOTOR PERFORMANCE SUMMARY

Design performance summary may be obtained using a variety of calculation methods and organized in the form of reports including numerical results, graphs, shaded plots etc.
