Servo motor design using MotorSolve: Sizing

Gallery spotlight
Motors and generators

The sizing feature of MotorSolve can be used to obtain an initial design of a motor model at the onset on the motor design process. It is an automated feature which uses as input, the target performance specifications and design constraints of the motor, and outputs a complete design including model dimensions and winding details including winding layout, phase coil details and end turn electrical parameters.

METHODS and RESULTS

Design Specifications

The task is to design a servo motor with the following specifications: speed: 3500 RPM, Torque: 2 Nm, efficiency > 85%, DC link Voltage: dual 150/300 V, Frame size: 80 mm., Rotor type: surface mounted bread-loaf (interior), 8 pole/12 slot machine. The sizing interface, along with these input are shown in the attached figure.

Concluding Remarks

It is clear from the results presented here that the output of the sizing feature gives a good initial model, considering the target performance characteristics. Typically, a design cycle of design refinements, iterations, PWM simulations can then be carried out using MotorSolve to obtain the final design.
